On May 9, the FIMFA Lx24 Lisbon Puppetry Festival welcomed guests with award-winning performances at the picturesque sight of Castelo de São Jorge. No worries if you missed the show, as the International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms lasts till June 2, offering a plethora of exciting performances to see.
Highlights of FIMFA Lx24 Lisbon Puppetry Festival
Here is my to-watch list from its program: FIMFA Program
LA (NOUVELLE) RONDE
Johanny Bert – Théâtre de Romette (France)
- Dates: May 23-25
- Location: SÃO LUIZ TEATRO MUNICIPAL
This provocative ode to love and freedom explores love in all shapes imaginable: bisexual, asexual, queer, you name it. Directed by Johanny Bert, La Ronde is based on Arthur Schnitzler’s play and rewritten by Yann Verburgh, which explains the naming of the show. Don’t take kids, I guess.
GOUPIL & KOSMAO
Étienne Saglio – Cie Monstre(s) (France)
- Dates: May 24-26
- Location: SÃO LUIZ TEATRO MUNICIPAL
Welcome to the cabaret! Delve into the humor-infused magic show of Kosmao (Étienne Saglio) and his apprentice Goupil—a stuffed fox who made his way to stardom from serving as a scarf to a fashionable Parisienne. It’s hard to fight his charisma, and gradually Goupil steals the show. But will Kosmao give up his glory? This show is oriented for a younger audience, yet it is enjoyable for all ages.
THE DILETTANTE (*WHO DREAMT OF AN ANGEL)
Kosmos Theatre (Lithuania)
- Dates: May 28-29
- Location: ESCOLA DO LARGO
This mono-performance explores the nonconventional universe of Jean Cocteau. The performance is a free interpretation of Cocteau’s vast heritage, including his paintings, plays, and films. Combining classical theater with technical innovations is proven to be a signature style of Kosmos Theatre. THE DILETTANTE combines object manipulation and video mapping.
Opening Recap of FIMFA Lx24 Lisbon Puppetry Festival
The opening performances were a blast to watch.
We were welcomed to the equestrian show of three famous riders who are preparing to win the gold medal. They get into the challenge with their famous French attitude that makes us laugh non-stop. At the same time, a giant spider was fooling around the properties. Meet Arachnobot, creation of the British master of monsters Tim Davies. Everyone from young to old enjoyed the performance of Boucherie Bacul, a family butchery trading Barbie’s legs and stuffed animals—vegan and cruelty-free, of course.
And I truly regret missing KAMIDOPOF, inspired by Miyazaki’s creatures and Gogol’s St. Petersburg Stories.
